The term “ijazah” did not appear until the third century AH, when scholars would travel for months to specific authorities (shaikhs), especially the oldest and most respected ones at the time, to hear hadiths and the Qur’an from their mouths and receive their permission (ijazah) to translate them to their names.
This chain has continued to the present day. Students of the Qur’an and Hadith seek qualified sheikhs to gain their approval that they have mastered what they have learned and can now pass it on to others.
Ijazah is also a great responsibility; it must not be given to someone who does not deserve it. This is why there are conditions to be a holder of Ijazah.
